The Surfing Association of Nova Scotia (SANS) is a provincial organization – established to represent the interests of surfers from across the province.
SANS is working on an strategic operational plan at the moment and one of our key goals is to ensure that SANS represents interests and issues related to surfing from across our province.
At our next Board Meeting on December 10, I plan to make some recommendations on how SANS can do this better.
If you have any ideas or thoughts on the following, please send a message to surfridersns@gmail.com:
- How can SANS represent the interests of surfers/surfing areas in all parts of Nova Scotia (not just HRM!)?
- What are the issues/needs/highlights/challenges about surfing or the surfing community in your region?
- How can SANS get more input from people from various regions of Nova Scotia?
- Other thoughts?
We would appreciate any feedback you can give us!
Best,
Amy Schwartz – VP SANS
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is once again awarding academic scholarships to junior surfers.
The main objective of the 2010 Individual Scholarship Program “is to provide financial support to junior surfers who demonstrate an actual need, in order to facilitate an experience in surfing while encouraging the importance of education.”
The money must be used by the recipients to travel to surf contests and/or upgrade their surfing equipment, as well as to foster their education.
Nova Scotia surfer Isaac Norman was one of 20 scholarship recipients in 2008.
Who is eligible?
All junior surfers who were 17 years of age or younger on January 1, 2009 and are enrolled in school and in good standing.
Applicants must also have a credible financial need for a scholarship that could not be provided by their families, sponsors or local government. In other words, the scholarship must make a big difference in a surfer’s academic and surf career.
And finally, applicants must be an inspiration to others.
The deadline for applications is December 11, 2009.
For more information on the ISA scholarship program or to apply, please contact Canadian Surfing Association President John Fluke by email at: canadiansurfing@yahoo.com

After weeks of postponements, some of the top surfers in Eastern Canada gathered on Saturday at the Moose in Cow Bay to compete in the “Shut Up and Surf Classic” contest.
To the envy of contest spectators, the lucky competitors got to “shut up and surf” in perfect conditions, without crowds.
“(These were) the best conditions for a SANS contest in the last nine years,” said Quicksilver rider Nico Manos, who took first place in the men’s open division.

This past summer, the Surfing Association of Nova Scotia (SANS) decided to be patient and hold the contest on a weekend when the conditions were ideal, even if that meant repeated postponements.
In the past, SANS traditionally held its fall contest on Labour Day. But solid surf conditions did not appear on a weekend until October 17.
“These waves are some of the best I’ve seen all year” said SANS board member Amy Theriault.“We couldn’t have asked for a better day. Sooner, maybe, but not better.”
Relief was the general mood of the day. Read More…

The following contest details are from SANS Co-Presidents and Contest Directors Justin Huston and Graham Bondt:
VENUE CHANGE: We’re shifting the contest to the Moose in Cow Bay, which will work with the forecasted swell and wind direction. If we’re lucky we’ll have some solid surf tomorrow morning and good winds.
COMPETITORS: Sign-in starts at 8am. You must sign in. We’ll be finalizing the heat schedule tomorrow morning. Women’s and Men’s divisions will be running first, with the first heats starting at 9am. You miss your heat, and you’re done. No exceptions. The original draft heat schedule is posted below, but this will change. Make sure you are at the Moose to sign-in in the morning. (Note to South Shore surfers: we’re placing you in the later heats to allow you some time to make the two-hour drive north. But please get up here as early as you can.)
RESPECT: All competitors, spectators, and volunteers need to remember that the Moose is a community space that needs to be respected. This means, no irresponsible behavior, bad parking, littering etc. This is very, very important, and I hope everyone will make this a priority.
PARKING: There is not a lot of space for parking, and many cars may need to park along Cow Bay Road. If possible, please car pool. If you park along the road, please pull off on the shoulder as much as possible.
AFTER PARTY: Following the contest, there will be an after-party, just down the road at “Barnfest II” in Cow Bay to announce the winners and get down!
See you Saturday morning!

SurfAid International has launched an Emergency Response Appeal to help the people of Padang, Indonesia who were hit by a huge earthquake (7.6 on the Richter scale) on Wednesday.
SurfAid Program Director Dr David Lange narrowly escaped death as he fled the Ambacang Hotel, which then collapsed, killing many and trapping others.
“People are trapped and screaming for help but they are below huge slabs which will take heavy equipment to move,” said Dr. Lange. “I saw dozens of the biggest buildings collapsed in town, most of the damage is concentrated in the commercial centre market, which was fully packed.”
Many buildings have been destroyed with people caught underneath the rubble. There is a report that schoolchildren are still trapped underneath three schools. One hospital is destroyed and another so badly damaged that staff are working in tents outside. Doctors used car headlights and torches to operate on the injured overnight.
Located on the island of Sumatra, Pandang is a popular surfing destination, particularly for Australian surfers.
