Ecology Action Centre releases beach report
With ocean-related sports like surfing exploding in Nova Scotia, concerns about beach use, access and management are becoming key issues across the province.
This week, the Ecology Action Centre has released a discussion paper about Nova Scotia’s beach systems called “True Grit: A New Vision For Healthy Beaches in Nova Scotia”.
Based on information gathered in 2008, the discussion paper begins by addressing shoreline management changes facing planners, decision-makers and communities.
The paper proceeds to focus on three crucial themes:
1. Beaches as dynamic and interconnected systems
2. Beaches as critical habitat
3. Beaches as public space for sustainable human use
The document concludes by highlighting emerging beach management principles and raises further questions for discussion which surfaced at a November 27 workshop.
The paper is available for download this week at: http://ecologyaction.ca/files/images/file/Coastal/TrueGrit.pdf
Following up on “True Grit”, the Ecology Action Centre will soon release a “Beach Management Strategic Report”.
